OneMap IdeaWorks! Exhibition and Award Ceremony

OneMap IdeaWorks! Exhibition and Award Ceremony

12 October 2017– A solution to improve caregiving for the elderly through movement tracking, fall and emergency alerts. A mobile app connecting volunteers to places where one can make a difference. These were some of the innovative solutions from participating teams on display at the Singapore Land Authority (SLA)’s OneMap IdeaWorks! Exhibition and Award Ceremony held today.

2             OneMap IdeaWorks!, launched by the SLA in July this year, brought together technologists, data scientists and community organisations to co-develop geospatial solutions to overcome daily challenges faced by communities through the use of the new OneMap and open geospatial data, in support of the Smart Nation initiative.

3             This campaign attracted challenge statements from over 30 community and public agency partners. These challenges spanned from social services, the environment, health, transport to heritage. Technologists and data scientists responded - students and professionals from universities, polytechnics, Institutes of Technical Education (ITE), start-ups and the industry. Tsang Ling of Team NYP from Nanyang Polytechnic said, “Working with community partners to solve community problems is a meaningful learning opportunity. And seeing our idea grow into a complete solution for the community gives me a great sense of accomplishment.”

4             “OneMap IdeaWorks! demonstrates SLA’s commitment to grow a geospatial eco-system to co-create innovative solutions that benefit the community in our progress towards making Singapore a Smart Nation”, explained SLA Chief Executive, Tan Boon Khai. Mr Amos Wee, President of the Singapore National Stroke Association said, “Looking at the teams’ solutions, we are encouraged that persons with special needs and caregivers are given the technological means to overcome challenges in improving mobility and navigation. We look forward to more of such initiatives in the future.”

5             Following three months of ideation, prototyping and technical sessions, four teams made it to the finals after the preliminary round of judging.  Dr Chong Yoke Sin, Chief Enterprise Business Group of Starhub Ltd, who sat on the judging panel said, “I would like to congratulate SLA for the successful run of IdeaWorks, in which StarHub had the opportunity to make contributions to. There are certainly many interesting and creative ideas coming from the participating teams, and we hope some of these entries can be applied to help address the needs of community organisations.”

6             The winning teams received their awards from the Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, Mr K Shanmugam at the OneMap IdeaWorks! Exhibition and Awards Ceremony held at HDB Hub Atrium on Thursday, 12 October 2017.

7             In addition to exhibition booths demonstrating the solutions by participating teams, apps and services by adopters of the new OneMap were also showcased to the public at this Ceremony.

8             The new OneMap is a mobile-centric platform offering location-based information and services for use by everyone. It also offers open Application Programming Interface (API) services for free to users for the development of apps and services.
