ASUS ROG has finally announced the new ROG Ally X gaming handheld, following a series of teasers and leaks, showcasing upgrades in several key areas.
According to official sources, the CPU remains the same: the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme. The device retains its 7-inch FHD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, runs on Windows 11 OS, and includes a 3-month Xbox Game Pass code.
The most noticeable upgrade is the storage capacity, now featuring a 1TB SSD in M.2 2280 format, replacing the previous 512GB M.2 2230. Additionally, the RAM has been increased from 16GB to 24GB, with a higher speed of 7500MHz.
Battery capacity has also seen a significant boost, now at 80WHr, although this doesn’t double the usage time due to, you know, physics. But this enhancement is achieved by making the fans 23% smaller with 50% thinner blades and adding two new tunnels in the fan housing to direct hot air towards a third exhaust vent. This results in stronger air movement and better cooling while occupying less space.
Another important change is replacing the ROG XG mobile port for eGPU connection with a USB-C 4.0 port, supporting DP 1.4 and PD 3.0 protocols. This is a more practical choice, as the original design likely showed that players prefer the portability of the handheld over connecting it to an external graphics card.
In terms of design, the device now comes in an additional black colorway, with slight adjustments to the joystick and face buttons. Excluding the subjective argument of whether it is comfortable to use, at least they are far durable and sensitive to inputs now.
