M-DISC Technology

M-DISC is in fact a compact disk that is made from an extremely durable material for its data layer. Unlike standard disks that are susceptible to natural degradation like oxidation, M-DISC are totally inert to it. This means that data stored within M-DISCs wiill not be in any way modified or corrupted due to the environment hundreds of years after data has been written on it.

ASUS claims that usual DVDs will start to malfunction in 7 years. On the other hand, M-DISCs are made to last for a millennium. M-DISCs are also less affected by differences in other physical conditions such as heat and humidity, resulting it to be a great archival media. Such media should store the most valuable data that should never be destroyed. M-DISCs are available as DVD and Blu-Ray disc formats and can store data from 4.7GB (DVD-R) to 100GB (BD-R XL) per disc.

The ASUS ZenDrive U7M

ASUS is one of the three known manufacturers that produces optical drives that can record M-DISC media. In this article, we will be reviewing the ASUS ZenDrive U7M Optical Drive that is compatible with writing of M-DISC DVDs.

In terms of design, the ASUS ZenDrive U7M has inherited the Zen design elements from other ASUS Zen products. Similar to the ASUS ZenBooks, the external optical drive has a circular brushed design patter on the front, that is topped with a shiny reflective ASUS logo. What seems to be metal is in fact plastic to ensure that there will be minimal disc recording interference.

The ZenDrive U7M functions just like any other external DVD writer. Simply plug the drive into the PC with the included mini USB cable and the drivers will automatically be installed. Getting started with using of the drive is really this simple. It is literally a "plug and play" experience. The ASUS ZenDrive U7M is also compatible with both Windows and MacOS operating systems.

To get started, users can simply start writing files to any writable standard DVDs or M-DISCs by the drag and drop method, or with specialized disc burning software that comes bundled with the drive.

The Cyberlink Power2Go 8 software that is included in the package can provide additional security features to the data that is written to the discs. This is done via a simple step by step process that is extremely friendly for less technology savvy users. Moreover, an included Nero BackItUp software also enables the easy backing up of data from any Android devices to the DVD M-DISCs.

Users are given a peach of mind with these solutions available. Data will be safely archived permanently in M-DISC with the ASUS ZenDrive U7M.

The ASUS ZenDrive U7M is available for purchase at all major IT retailers at a SRP of SGD 69. The package also contains two free M-DISCs for long time data archival.
