Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology has developed a new technology that allows a computer or TV screen to emit a variety of scents. With a interface between the content of the screen and a software, the viewer can smell the actual scents of an object coming from the screen.

In fact, this new technology is very simple. The developers simply placed gel like scent emitting substances at the edge of the display and used a small fan to allow faster diffusion of scented particles to the nose. This way, users can smell the scent quicker. Moreover, the wind coming from the fan is quite mild and the user will not feel the presence of it.

Currently, the scent emitter can only simulate a single scent. However, the researchers are working hard to simulate even more types of scent to make the prototype more complete. They hope that the device can be like a usual colour printer, but instead of printing all possible colour, it can emit any possible type of smell.

We are looking forward for their final prototype and hope that this product will be commercialized and used in future cinema for new dimension of experience in the movie industry.
